London’s burning

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

Just a quick one to say how shocked I am about the riots in London over the last few nights.

The first riots in Tottenham on Saturday night were bad enough but now they’re happening all over London.

There’s no excuse for destroying homes and shops, looting and terrorising. It’s all so mindless, and is just ruining the lives of innocent people.

The police are overwhelmed, the army needs to get involved now.

    Hi PJ,

I’ve been looking at the news - haven’t seen anything like this since Brixton and Toxteth back in the ’80s.

I see your area has been badly affected - I hope you and your family are safe?

Amazingly, I was in London with my nephew less than a fortnight ago and everything was fine - I never would have thought that something like this could kick off so fast and become so widespread as quickly as it has.

Anyway, stay indoors (if you haven’t decided to leave the area) and above all, stay safe…

Hey capt, it hasn’t been too bad around my area, though most of the local shops had closed before 6pm. Terrible scenes in central Croydon though, especially that furniture shop that was destroyed. Even my mum’s gym was set on fire for some unknown reason. It’s diabolical.

I’ve seen the pictures on TV - diabolical’s certainly the word.

What’s chilling is how almost ‘organized’ the whole thing seems to be, with gangs inviting each other to different areas by Blackberry (!)…

I stayed in West Kensington on my visit - that was the local tube station, but I think I was probably closer to Fulham. Anyway, reports in the media suggested that men with machetes (!) were seen in the area yesterday…

    It’s crazy…

Looks like the riots have calmed down for now at least. I didn’t hear about any machete-brandishing nutters in Kensington, but there has been a lot of madness going on this week. If I can I’d like to go to central Croydon over the weekend to survey the damage.

It looks pretty terrible from what I could tell on most media outlets. I think such blatant anarchy is very rare even for the states. Almost like you have to get the X-men or Spiderman involved sheez. Anyways hope they find a way to neutralize these dirtbags.

Yeah it was pretty bad, but it seems to have fizzled out this week. I was hoping that the government’s COBRA emergency committee was going to have something special up its sleeve, but no superheroes were forthcoming. Our army was too busy elsewhere, but thankfully the police sorted themselves out after a couple of nights. They arrested more than 1000 people and the courts have been busy round the clock processing them. Mothers have been handing in their own kids for punishment too. It’s been an interesting couple of weeks here. News Corp must be pleased to have been knocked off the front pages. Nice blog btw
