Interesting subject matter – a story I didn’t know about before (though it has echoes of union struggles in this country).
I was struck, too, by your feelings about the union militancy (a point thoughtfully made).
Of course, if I’ve ready the wrong review in my current half-zonked, insomniac, autopilot state, this post will make no sense at all.

Oh, dear God… yep, I did read the wrong review (feel free to delete my last post – it’s been one of those days, weeks, whatever).
Just read your actual review. It did intrigue me enough to think about trying the book – I guess partly because I haven’t heard of steam punk before (though it somehow doesn’t surprise me as a genre).
I have to say I tend to breathe a sigh of relief when there isn’t a map (when I see maps, I tend to feel like there’s going to be an exam afterwards… but that’s just me – I have the greatest of respect for cartographer dudes everywhere).

I’m not sure which review you read first (the American History one?), but I was amused by your error.

I’m not a fan of maps either, but that book really needed one.

The one I read by mistake was something about a strike somewhere in the US (turned out to be by someone called Suzy – see? Suzy/Penny: your names are practically identical

I did read Samurai Frog’s American History review, too. Some fascinating books being reviewed over there.
