Music Meme (1998)
Wednesday, June 6th, 2007Becca at No Smoking in the Skull Cave has tagged me to share some of the music of my youth with you all. The rules of the meme are as follows:
1. Go to www.popculturemadness.com
2. Pick the year you turned 18
3. Get yourself nostalgic over the songs of the year
4. Write something about how the song affected you
5. Pass it on to 5 more friends
I had a look at the website, but saw that most of the US Billboard #1s of that year did not really move me, so further investigation was needed. I found the UK Top 40 archives at Everyhit.com and found more to go on there.
In 1998, I was mainly into RnB and pop, but I’ve always been open to a little jazz, rock and world music too. It was a fun year in pop music - the Spice Girls were on their way out (thank goodness), and lots of RnB artists were mixing it up with a latino flavour.
It was so hard to choose just 5 tracks, there were so many that I loved back then!
- When You Believe (Mariah Carey & Whitney Houston) - This song was from the soundtrack of the Prince of Egypt. When the film came out I was working at a downmarket cinema (which has since been demolished). I still remember sweeping up the popcorn while this track played with the end credits. Two years later I sang this song at my music college audition and was accepted.
- You make Me Wanna (Usher). I’ve still got this promotional postcard on my wardrode door, I think he was so cute in this pic.
- Frozen (Madonna). I just love the video to the song. You have to admire Madonna’s tenacity and creativity.
- No No No (Destiny’s Child).
I went to see Destiny’s Child with some friends at Camden Palace, this was before they were really mainstream. It was a good show, and one things still sticks in my mind nearly 10 years later. The girls were doing a routine with chairs, Beyoncé was singing lead in front and the others were doing their usual BVs (backing vocals) behind her. As she was concentrating on her singing, Beyoncé didn’t notice that her chair was slightly out of position, luckily her cousin Kelly noticed and moved forward to discreetly adjust the chair so that Beyoncé could sit straight down in the chair instead of falling down, which is what would have happened without Kelly’s intervention. It was revealing that the other two girls didn’t seem to care…
- How Deep Is Your Love (Dru Hill)
Papi, te quiero mucho…
I love Sisqo’s voice, and he’s such a cutie. The Thong Song was just around the corner.

Talking about the Thong Song, isn’t this video just wicked?! It always cheers me up.
Thanks Becca, that was fun!
I’m going to tag:

Thanks for doing this! It’s so neat to get to know a little bit more about whose blog I read on a regular basis. I didn’t know you were a singer! How teriffic! I can’t sing to save my life so I have a great appreciation for those who can. Very cool.
