8 things

HRH Baroness Becca has tagged me to do this 8 things about me meme that’s been going around.

Here are the rules:

1. I have to post these rules before I give you the facts.
2. Each player starts with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
3. People who are tagged need to write their own blog about their eight things and post these rules.
4. At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names. (You’re not the boss of me!)
5. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.

So what can I tell you?

1. In 2002 I lived with a Ukrainian guy for seven months. It’s a long story…

2. I have a strange attraction for monks. It’s the robes, and the chastity, and the bald heads, and their dutiful benevolence!

Pic of me with a monk in a temple in Ueno, Tokyo.

3. I spent a couple of weeks in Japan in 2001. I was invited to my Japanese friend’s wedding in Tokyo, so I accepted the invitation and stayed in a cheap ryokan (traditional style Japanese accommodation) in Asakusa. It was the perfect holiday and I’d love to go back to Japan some day. I have a fantasy about living there for six months, which I might do at some point.

4. Between the ages of 14-25 I was a music obsessive. I was obsessed with becoming a musician/performer/producer/songwriter. I learnt the basics of the guitar, keyboard, African drums and saxophone. I went to music college to study vocal performance. I even got an admin job in a music department in a university as I thought it would be a step in the right direction… Then in 2005 I decided that I’d spent enough time pursuing music, and that it was time to go back to the beginning, to the thing that had initially sparked my interest in music - songwriting writing. Which is why I’m pursuing fiction writing now, though I just bought myself a new sax last week, which I’m calling Lisa for obvious reasons.

5. I mostly use the automatic settings on my camera when taking photos. I guess I’m more concerned with the subject matter than the technical aspects of photography. I am learning to use the manual modes more, but not all the time. Sometimes there isn’t time. Sometimes I’m lazy

6. I can speak Spanish, though I’m rather rusty now. In 1997 I went to Spain with the rest of my Spanish language class. We all worked at a hotel and lived with families based in Toledo. Every evening after work we’d all meet up in town and go clubbing… It got to the point when I realised why the Spanish have siestas!

7. My signature fragrance is Versace Red Jeans. It’s ravishing, just like me.

8. I like collecting buddha statues, saxophone memorabilia, pretty pens, notebooks and postcards. But you know most of that already, right?

I don’t feel like tagging anyone in particular, so I won’t. But if you wanna do it, go for it.

It’s all so very interesting! And yeah I finally get to see what you look like!

Monks are cute, I have a weird thing for asian men in general tho…I blame Tishiro Mifune and Chou Yun Fat. Do you speak Japanese? It would be such an adventure to just move there and try to blend in with society.

I didn’t realize you were so musically inclined! I have so much respect for anyone who can play or write music as I have no clue how to do either.

Your pictures are great! I especially love the weirdness of the bondage shop photos.

Very cool! Thanks for doing this, it’s such a great way to learn a little something more about the people whose blogs I read. What a fun meme!

My attraction to Asian guys started one Saturday afternoon when I was watching Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story at the cinema…

I don’t speak Japanese (yet), though I learned some basic phrases before I went there. I love to try out new languages and learning about different cultures, so it was a lot of fun for me. Whenever I go to a place where they don’t speak English I always try to learn some basic phrases as I can’t assume that everyone there is going to know English. It’s more fun that way too, like an adventure.

I really admire your artwork, like I said, I’d love to commission you at some point.

I have a thing for pens, too. And oh, how I’d love to go to Japan.
