Video: Would I lie to you? by Charles and Eddie

Sam the Frog has tagged me to tell you seven things about myself which may (or may not) be true.

1. I used to be a backing singer for Michael Jackson. Man, I loved wearing that sexy leather outfit on the Bad tour. He’d stare at me when he sang Dirty Diana.

2. I always finish books once I’ve started them. A few years ago I started reading the second Harry Potter book, but I couldn’t bear to read on, so I ate it. With chicken noodle soup. Libro finito.

3. When I was an impoverished student a few years ago, I became a sex-line operator. My sex-op name was Shandy. While I chatted filth to the punters I typed my anthropology thesis.

4. When the King of Jordan requires a sensual bellydancer for a private performance, he sends for me. I cannot refuse on pain of execution, no matter what other plans I have made for the week.

5. Dr Monkey fathered my baby, Monty. We had one glorious night of passion then he left my bed forever “because American needed [him]“. He’s my hero, and he should be yours, America. I still yearn for the midas touch of his paws on my skin. Monkey/love is a panacea for the soul.

6. J.D. is actually my son too, to whom I gave birth when I was just 13 years old. He hates me because I left him in America where he has yet to see Atonement. His father was a brilliant American spy and film enthusiast, who I met and loved during an joint US-UK operation in Alaska.

7. I’m not British at all. I am actually a very cute J-Pop star called Hitomi Shimatani.

Infected!

Monday, December 10th, 2007 | Posted in Uncategorized

virus

Splotchy recently started a viral story, then tagged SamuraiFrog, who has now infected me.

As Spiderman knows, with great power comes great responsibility, so I hope that my particular strain of this virus will infect loads more bloggers (like crabs but without the itching).

Here are the terms & conditions straight from the man himself:

“This has probably been done before, but that is not stopping me, oh no.

Here’s what I would like to do. I want to create a story that branches out in a variety of different, unexpected ways. I don’t know how realistic it is, but that’s what I’m aiming for. Hopefully, at least one thread of the story can make a decent number of hops before it dies out.

If you are one of the carriers of this story virus (i.e. you have been tagged and choose to contribute to it), you will have one responsibility, in addition to contributing your own piece of the story: you will have to tag at least one person that continues your story thread. So, say you tag five people. If four people decide to not participate, it’s okay, as long as the fifth one does. And if all five participate, well that’s five interesting threads the story spins off into.

Not a requirement, but something your readers would appreciate: to help people trace your own particular thread of the narrative, it will be helpful if you include links to the chapters preceding yours.”

So, here goes:

I woke up hungry. I pulled my bedroom curtain to the side and looked out on a hazy morning. I dragged myself into the kitchen, in search of something to eat. I reached for a jar of applesauce sitting next to the sink, and found it very cold to the touch. I opened the jar and realized it was frozen. (Splotchy)

My first idea was to put the applesauce in the microwave. Hey, I was still tired. Could I scoop some out and put whipped cream on it? No, too solid. Why was it so damn cold in here? I walked over to the thermostat and saw that the heat hadn’t clicked on all night and the temperature had dropped substantially overnight. Now, tired and hungry, I opened the access panel on the heater. There’s the problem: why was someone cooking a duck in here? (SamuraiFrog)

I grabbed the bird and bit into a leg. It tasted like cheese. Or chicken. What kind of weird duck was this? I spat out the rancid meat and threw the rest of the duck in the bin.
Jackson strode into the kitchen, his short dreadlocks bouncing lightly around his face.
“Is my duck ready yet?” he said as he turned towards me. “Hey man, put some clothes on!”
Shit, I had forgotten to put on my boxers.

Eight more things about me

Monday, December 10th, 2007 | Posted in my life

BV has tagged me to do the 8 meme again. I’m not going to tag anyone, but feel free to do it if you wanna.

1. We have to post these rules before we give you the facts.
2. Players start with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
3. People who are tagged write their own blog post about their eight things and include these rules.
4. At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged and that they should read your blog.
5. Eight is a magic number. Not three.

1. After I’ve had a good experience, especially with a guy, I count time back to the event. For instance, 2 hours ago he kissed me. 12 hours ago… a day ago…

2. I’ve read 82 books so far this year. I’m hoping to make it to 100 by the 31st. A while ago I realised that I’ve surpassed the goal of 50 books that I’d set for myself earlier in the year.

3. I rarely wear makeup, but I like to buy lipsticks and lipglosses.

nail polish

4. When I finished secondary school (aged 16) I put on bright red nail polish, just because I could. My strict Catholic girls’ school wouldn’t let us wear makeup or wear much jewellery.

5. My parents aren’t married, so the tabloid newspapers would call me a love-child instead of that other word…

6. I have a half-brother and sister on my dad’s side, who I’ve only met once. I’m also an auntie, but I haven’t seen my niece since she was a baby. She must be about 10 years old by now. I wonder how they all are but I don’t know how to get in touch with them since they moved house.

7. I’m watching Judge Judy right now. I watch her every weekday in the evenings after work, and I watch Divorce Court in the mornings before work.

8. I’ve just decided that I have too much stuff. I need to get rid of all the extraneous objects in my life and focus on what’s most important. I’m sure I’ll discuss this issue in more detail another time.

Book Meme

Thursday, October 18th, 2007 | Posted in reading

The lovely Liane Spicer tagged me for this book meme, which is my first ever book meme.

1. Total number of books: 417 according to Librarything, but I regularly give away books to charity so I don’t have much of a clue. I’d say that I have about 300 books in my possession right now.

2. Last book read:

The Princess Bride by William Goldman

The Princess Bride by William Goldman.

Like everyone else, I’d enjoyed the film version in the late 1980s, but hadn’t read the original novel on which it was based. The novel is very similar to the novel, so much so that I was reliving certain scenes in my head while I was reading it. I don’t think I’ve ever smiled so while as I read a book, though the frame story was a bit over-complicated at times.

3. Last book bought: I bought several books at the same time actually.

A Heart so White by Javier Marías

4. Five Meaningful books:

Ugly by Constance Briscoe
Ugly by Constance Briscoe

Constance Briscoe’s account of the emotional and physical abuse she suffered during her childhood. Despite this she went on to become one of the UK’s first black female judges. I discovered that she grew up in the same part of London where I spent my childhood, which gave an extra layer of authenticity to the book for me. After reading this book I became a lot more grateful for my relatively normal childhood.

Property by Valerie Martin
Property by Valerie Martin

A novel based in America’s deep South in the early 19th century which explores the tension between the wife of a plantation owner and one of their slaves, with whom he was having an affair. The book is beautifully written; no word is wasted.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See

Set in 19th century China, young Lily is told that if bound correctly, her feet could be flawless. As the daughter of a humble farmer, this news is very auspicious. She is matched to a prosperous girl of a similar age, whose friendship becomes a treasured part of Lily’s life.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

I don’t think I need to say too much about this one. It requires patience, but that patience is rewarded by the end.

Dirty Havana Trilogy by Pedro Juan Gutiérrez
Dirty Havana Trilogy by Pedro Juan Gutiérrez

I only read this book a few weeks ago, but it has become one of my favourite books. Actually, to call it a favourite might be misleading. I hate this book with all my feeling, but at the same time I love it. The “trilogy” is a collection of short stories by Pedro Juan, a guy in his 40s living in Havana, Cuba. I can’t be sure whether any of the stories are based on fact or fiction, but they are enlightening in more ways than one. The book gives a tour of the dark side of Havana: the filth, the sex, the inequality and the hunger. Every man is a hustler, every woman is a whore. Pedro Juan is a product of his environment; he is racially prejudiced, yet he is so philosophical about humanity and its weaknesses. After reading this book I want to visit Cuba even more than before, but at least now I’ll be mentally prepared for its dirty beauty.

Meme of Four

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007 | Posted in Uncategorized

Dr M and Becca have tagged me for this meme, but I shall do it only once. It involves answering the questions then adding your own question at the end.

Nun

Four jobs I’ve had or currently have in my life:

1. My first job was in McDonalds. I lasted 4 days. Getting oil burns on my arms and being sworn at wasn’t my idea of fun.

2. When I was 18 or 19 I worked part-time in a cinema. It was fantastic, I watched so many films while I was there. The projectionist was a complete psycho, but everyone else was really nice.

3. When I was 21 I worked in a library. I loved being around all those books, and I actually lost weight while I was there as I was always on the move.

4. Now I’m working as an Administrator in a counselling centre.

Four countries I have been to:

1. USA
2. Egypt
3. Madeira
4. Spain

Four places I’d rather be right now:

1. Japan
2. Scotland
3. Brazil
4. Tesco (supermarket)

Four foods I like to eat:

1. Dumplings (fried, boiled, in soup, whatever)
2. Biscuits
3. Crunchy-nut cornflakes (with or without milk)
4. Chocolate

Four personal heroes, past or present:

1. My mum
2. Mariah Carey
3. Josephine Baker
4. Constance Briscoe - I’ve just finished reading her autobiography and it amazed me.

Four books you’ve just read or are currently reading:

1. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See
2. Ugly by Constance Briscoe
3. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
4. The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger

Four words or phrases you would like to see used more often:
1. irreverent revelry
2. shot put
3. Russian kettle-bells
4. meaty men/man

My question: Four singers/musicians/bands that you like:

1. Ella Fitzgerald
2. Candy Dulfer
3. Missy Elliott
4. Eric Benet
