Love London
Sunday, January 6th, 2008Last Wednesday I was bored of hanging around the house and decided to go out. I didn’t have any specific plans, though I wanted to go to the National Portrait Gallery and the OXO Tower if possible.
Whilst on the train to Victoria I decided to get off at Clapham Junction and see my brother at work. We caught up for a few moments in between customers, and I bought a cheap camera off him (Sony Cybershot, 6MP for £70 including accessories cos they didn’t have a box for it).
Afterwards, I visited the nearby Debenhams department store and bought some clothes. Then I decided to get a bus into central London. I caught a single-decker bus (route 239) which was heading to Victoria. There was just me and a few elderly women on the bus. After a little while I looked out and saw a great view of the Thames at Battersea. I decided to get off the bus at the next stop and take some pics of that view.
I saw a few brave joggers making their way along the walk, plus a man and his dog (which leapt up on me in a friendly way).
When my hands got too cold to take any more snaps I decided to continue on my way to central London. While walking to the bus stop I noticed these two dogs who’d been left alone in their owner’s car. They looked terribly sad. I hope that their owner(s) went back for them soon.
I got a different bus (route 49), which was heading to Shepherd’s Bush via Kensington. What the hell, I thought. It was a lovely scenic journey, crossing over Battersea bridge then venturing into the posh area of Kensington. I ended up in Shepherd’s Bush after all. I visited the shopping centre and had a toasted sandwich at a café.
Then this cute Chinese guy gave me a 15 minute Tui Na massage. It was more of an invigorating massage than a relaxing one.
After that I took a 94 bus to Oxford Street (after being misdirected by a different bus driver, and ending up at Acton - which was actually fine, cos I was able to reminisce about my music college which was nearby). There was loads of traffic at the Marble Arch side of Oxford Street so I ended up getting off early and walking down to Oxford Circus, which was where a certain card shop I liked was situated. They were selling 2008 calendars at half-price so I picked up a tropical island one for £2.50.
By this time I was tired so I got a 159 to Brixton then got my bus home. I really enjoyed my day out, and the great thing about travelling on the bus is that you can identity new places that you’d like to visit at a later date. Try to do that on the tube.

By the way, I read on Jamaipanese’s blog that London is officially the greatest city in the world in terms of cultural and economic influence (Tokyo was fourth).

Nice snaps, I love the boat on the beach. We all should play tourist in our own cities more often rather than slugging through the daily grind without seeing.

What nostalgia! I wish I could have taken that trip with you. The 159 used to be my bus, taking me to my stop in Lisson Grove.

That’s one of the things I miss about living in a big city, just getting on a bus and seeing parts of it when the mood hits. I”d love to knock around London sometime and explore the off the beaten path parts of your great city.

Now I’m nostalgic for a place I’ve never visited. One day, one day…
