13 Kick-Ass Heroines (Vol. 3)

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

Also check out Vol 1 and Vol 2

1. Zoe, Firefly/Serenity

2. Senator Padmé Amidala, Star Wars
I especially loved the colloseum-style fight scene in Attack of the Clones

3. Purdey, The New Avengers

4. Wai Lin, Tomorrow Never Dies

Michelle Yeoh is a kick-ass goddess!

5. Aeryn Sun, Farscape (a suggestion from last week)

6. Eowyn, Lord of the Rings (another suggestion from last week)

7. Flying Snow, Hero

Maggie Cheung plays a formidable assassin in this film. Check out this beautiful scene which features her and Jet Li fending off hundreds of arrows to protect a calligraphy school.

8. Mrs Smith, Mr and Mrs Smith

9. Ellen, The Quick and The Dead

10. Æon Flux

Not a great movie, but an interesting heroine.

11. Tasha Dexter, V.I.P

The other VIP girl, Nikki Franco, was also plenty kick-ass, so she’s here too. I couldn’t find a decent action pic of her, so I settled for a sexy one.

12. Elizabeth Swann, Pirates of the Caribbean

13. Trinity, The Matrix

-

Honourable mentions:

Alice, Resident Evil

Grace (and also Det. Dana Dickson), Martial Law

Krista Starr, Blade (The Series)

Starbuck, Battlestar Galactica (new)

Thanks to everyone who commented and made suggestions.

Funny thing is that a female character that just screams and runs away would be the surprise in a TV show / film these days. Not that I’m objecting I much prefer these characters to the running away screaming kind.

Cool list and great pictures! Nothing like super-empowered women.

    Hi Mark,
It’s true, I never noticed how many strong females there were out there until I did these posts.

And to think that Buffy was created as a kind of joke, playing on the idea that usually in horror movies the pretty blonde girl would get killed by a monster after going somewhere she shouldn’t have gone. Instead of that this pretty blonde girl would beat the hell out of any monster who was stupid enough to get in her way.

Even more movies/shows I haven’t seen. I really need to get caught up on my warrior-heroine movies.

Totally loved the Firefly series and the Serenity movie. Great idea for a TT post. We’ve come along way from the original Emma Peel in the Avengers . . .

    Nicholas:

Oh dear! I’ve never heard of any of those except, of course, lovely Purdey, whom I love in all her incarnations, even Patsy.

Great choices!! I’m partial to Trinity, but maybe because I’ve seen that movie I have no idea how many times!

    Karen (Miscellaneous Mum):

I’d have trinity at #1 - she’s awesome - but I must say Zoe is a great character too. It took me a while, but I really warmed up to Firefly

    Yay for Zoe. She’s great.

Hi all, thanks for your comments.

Karen (misc mum): It’s not in any particular order, but Trinity is the ultimate kick-ass warrior princess.

Jenny: I knew I’d forgotten someone, so here are a couple of pics of the original and new teams of Charlie’s Angels.

My favorite out of these would be # 13 - Trinity even though I’m not a huge Matrix fan.

Isn’t it fabulous women can look beautiful whether they’re gentle flowers or kick ass vixens! Don’t mess with the ladies, we’ll surprise you every time
I’ve enjoyed this list…even more that they number 3 volumes and then some!

  22. 22
    L-Squared:

I’m not as familiar with most of these as I was the women on your previous lists (apparently I need to watch more movies & TV shows), but I’m sure they all kick ass too!

Thanks for visiting my TT.

My TT is up - 13 (+6 bonus!) free samples available online

    Joy T.:

Great idea for TT! I didn’t realize there were so many Heroines. Love it!!

  25. 25
    Susan Helene Gottfried:

Aeryn Sun?? whatever gave you the idea to include her????
Love this list. We need more strong women role models for our daughters. I’ve tried to keep #2 away from the whole Princess thing, but … it’s too pervasive. At least I’ve kept both kids from the whole rap music culture so far…

  26. 26
    Karina:

Great list! I checked out Vol.s 1 and 2 too…Gave me some ideas for movies I have yet to watch too!

  27. 27
    Joely:

Another great list! Makes me want to pull out some DVDs.

    samulli:

Again, a great list. Finally Zoe, Eowyn and Trinity got their well deserved mention. I must admit I don’t know some of the others, but I agree with the other commentors that it’s great to see there are a lot of kick-ass heroines around these days.

  29. 29
    Tink:

Great list just like vol. 1 & 2!
    Thanks for visiting my TT.
